Officially, biomimicry is defined as technical imitation processes, compositions, forms or even interactions of different biological systems found in nature , from the biomolecular to the ecosystem scale. In essence, biomimicry relies on intelligence and the sobriety of biological principles for impactful design, sober and sustainable technologies. More broadly, we can sometimes use the notion of bio-inspiration which encompasses all sciences inspired by living organisms in the design of new systems. At Bioxegy , we use biomimicry as a R&D approach inspired by the ingenuity of the mechanisms, properties and functions of living things to innovate and shape efficient and sustainable technologies. Discover our profession Biomimicry's promise Biomimicry's pormise is to take advantage of the largest R&D laboratory: Nature . It offers us the most beautiful evidence: 3.8 billion years of innovation at your fingertips. Living things have had time to find appropriate and diversified solutions to respond to a wide range of challenges , and ensure the survival of several tens of millions of different species, in constrained environments. The result is a prodigious pool of ideas and sophisticated, optimised and sober approaches . An unprecedented opportunity to innovate and which is right before our eyes! The powerful industrial and scientific growth of biomimicry Bio-inspiration is not new, it is a research method that began to prove itself several decades ago! There are many very emblematic examples of biomimicry , we can cite the invention of velcro in the 1950s which is directly inspired by burdock seeds. But before that, Leonardo da Vinci did not wait for the formalisation of biomimicry to draw inspiration from nature for his inventions! However, it was only from the 1990s that interest in bio-inspired innovation exploded both in industry and in research , mainly thanks to Janine Benyus which formalised biomimicry. This American scientist founded the Biomimicry Institute in the United States in 2006 to further promote biomimicry. Today, biomimicry is the subject of real international scientific craze . Competition is intense in the corridors of the most prestigious universities and research centers in the world, which are developing ever more promising expertise. The Da Vinci Index was even created to measure global activity of biomimicry, whether in terms of research articles or commercial applications, largely dominated by China. The latest highlight to date: the CNRS has included biomimicry as part of its strategic priorities for 2023. Discover the emblematic technologies Biomimicry: areas and levers of application The technological diversity of nature makes biomimicry a profoundly cross-disciplinary lever for innovation . From aeronautics to health, including construction, energy, IT and even luxury: biomimicry is an approach that can theoretically be applied to all sectors of activity. A true toolbox, bio-inspiration makes it possible to respond to precise technological challenges (problem solving), to carry out prospective work and aim for breakthrough innovation (new product introduction) but also to improve existing technologies via incremental innovation (re-engineering). A single philosophy: get inspired of the wisdom of biological systems to innovate more intelligently . And this wisdom applies to almost every industry, you can browse examples by clicking the button below! Find out more about the application sectors Biomimicry: strong international enthusiasm Outside France, biomimicry is growing strongly. We can cite the example of NASA which set up the V.I.N.E network . to bring together researchers working in biomimicry by sharing analysis tools and initiating working groups. They even came up with a bio-inspired flying vehicle project to explore Venus' atmosphere! Staying in the space field, it is not just the Americans who are banking on biomimicry. Indeed, the ESA , the European Space Agency, initiated the BIOINSPACED project which consists of developing bio-inspired solutions to deorbit space debris . As you can see, the whole world is starting to turn towards nature to innovate , even in areas as complex as space. The promises and possibilities of biomimicry are so vast that we have only scratched the surface! This development is closely accompanied, biomimicry gives rise to research work standardisation by AFNOR (French Association for Standardisation) or the ISO (International Organisation for Standardisation) in order to provide a framework for this growth. Bio-inspired atmospheric vehicle © Javid Bayandor Biomimicry: a profession of the future Engineers who work in biomimicry know how to understand the complexity of the world around us as a whole. Innovating with inspiration from nature means knowing how to break down the mechanisms of nature to better transpose them to human technologies! At Bioxegy , our biomimetic engineers appeal to their wide range of skills ranging from mechanics to chemistry, including computer science, materials, and even biology . Everything is completed by an irreducible passion for how the world around them works and for innovation. This global understanding of societal issues and living organisms makes this profession one of the most complete in order to reconcile technical progress and sustainability , while drawing inspiration from the largest pool of adaptive mechanisms on the planet. - Biomimicry: explore a whole new universe of innovation through the living
Biomimicry uses the ingenuity of the living world to inspire the technologies and services of the future. Bioxegy is France's pioneering biomimicry agency. Dare to innovate in bio-inspired R&D! Analysis of the sector’s innovation potential Explore a whole new universe of innovation through the living. Bioxegy Biomimétisme The rise of innovation through biomimicry: the Da Vinci Index Biomimicry continues to attract curiosity in the world of innovation , whether it is researchers, R&D engineers or even CSR departments,… The Da Vinci Index , is an indicator developed by the Fermanian Business & Economic Institute in the United States, it quantifies innovation through biomimicry in the world, taking into account the number of scientific publications, patents and the amount of research funding in the field. The figures speak for themselves: between 2000 and 2019, the number of publications increased 10-fold globally (and 100-fold in China!), while the number of patents grew by +740% over the same period. + Evolution of the amount of biomimetic research papers from 1995 à 2018 Indian Institut of Technology Report Building on its success, biomimicry now expresses its potential beyond the boundaries of the academic sphere. Indeed, it has been developing little by little since the 2010s, with renewed interest in 2020, in the R&D departments of many manufacturers - ranging from start-ups to multinationals , passing through the tissues of SMEs and ETIs . Moreover, in collaboration with the R&D departments of large industrial groups, Bioxegy imagines, designs and develops cutting-edge bio-inspired technologies, adapted to the different technical challenges they encounter. Discover the benefits of biomimicry in these different sectors of activity below : Industrial sectors The benefits of innovations through biomimicry for the environment To answer to the constraints to which it is subject, the living must optimise its processes, mechanisms and structures. Over the course of evolution, the most efficient systems given the constraints of their environment have thrived and survived, leaving us with an inexhaustible source of inspiration and able to respond to most industrial issues encountered. There are many key elements in the success and potential of biomimicry for innovation. In essence, living organisms tend to optimise all factors (weight-resistance ratio, energy cost, thermal regulation, multifunctionality, etc.) while the industry aims to maximise one or more defined parameters (rarity of a material, possibility of machining, etc.) to the detriment of others. We see, for example, that living things produce many different materials from very few chemical elements (CHNOPS: carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and sulfur) assembled into complex structures while industrially, we find many simple structures but with many different chemical elements (the entire periodic table, including current issues with the use of rare earths). In this context, 3D printing has greatly contributed to the development of biomimicry by making it possible to intelligently develop structures inspired by life, that are more complex and material-saving. In short, the solutions developed by living organisms very frequently combine high performance, low production cost and multifunctionality. Drawing on the wisdom and intelligence of living know-how and thus reconciling technological progress and sustainability, this is our vision at Bioxegy. Biomimicry 3.8 was able to identify and transpose the major principles of life (these global strategic models found in the species that survive and thrive on Earth) into the principles of biomimicry. This outlines basic rules linked to biomimetic design and which allow biomimicry to be part of the principles of sustainable development established by the UN . Biomimicry's principles by Biomimicry 3.8 According to a report from BIS Institute on biomimicry in 2018, in the United States, biomimicry would save a value of 50 billion dollars in terms of conserved resources and CO2 not emitted by 2025. In 2030, this could represent 500 billion dollars globally. Innovation through biomimicry is already showing interesting results, in particular thanks to technologies making it possible to reduce the environmental impact or even to capture carbon, such as biomineralisation . It is precisely this mission that the European program CSTO2NE, which Bioxegy is apart of, leads to: a real interdisciplinary scientific collaboration project with the aim of identifying innovative and sustainable carbon absorption solutions, in particular through the formation of stable and resistant materials with important added value for the industry. Biomimicry's innovation potential and its growth As we have seen, biomimicry is a promising R&D and innovation method whose relevance to environmental issues and sustainable development is only reinforced. And it doesn’t stop there! Indeed, biomimicry is seen as a real lever for economic development in the coming years. By 2030, biomimicry could represent nearly 425 billion dollars per year of America's GDP (or 1.8%) and 2 million jobs in the United States. The predicted impact of bio-inspired innovation on employment in 2030 in the United States In South Korea, according to the Journal of Ecological Economics , the local development of bio-inspired technologies will represent nearly 62 billion dollars and 650,000 new jobs by 2035, and almost 382 billion in 2050 (i.e. 18% of its GDP). A national policy, launched in 2019, encourages the R&D development of bio-inspired technologies and the training of tomorrow's biomimetic engineers . The relevance of biomimicry and its potential growth is perceived by a growing number of countries, in particular by China whose government recently deployed substantial financial aid to support bio-inspired projects in the fields of design and architecture. China's growth in biomimicry is therefore 10 times faster than average ! At the global level, the report of BIS Institute predicts that biomimicry could constitute trilllions of dollars of GDP , so more than half of the global automotive sector. Confined to the development of strategies of highly industrialised countries, this potential for innovation could also be fully realised in developing countries where biomimicry today is still insufficiently considered and studied at its true value. Many countries in Latin America, Central Africa and South-East Asia, representing a large part of the world's biodiversity, have not yet fully exploited the potential of biomimicry, whose long-term economic and environmental benefits are estimated by the Journal of Ecological Economics . Biomimicry: a vector of the 6th wave of innovation After the digital revolution of the last 30 years, many researchers see biomimicry as a vector of the new technological and industrial revolution, it was also identified as one of the 8 vectors of the emergence of the sixth wave of innovation. In France, the CNRS (National Scientific Research Center) also mentionned biomimicry in its strategic priority areas in 2020. Indeed, biomimicry is a promising field, given the number of disciplines involved and the diversity of subjects. Its heterogeneous nature also induces a plurality of solutions possible and conceivable, and just as many implementation methods. Its ability to respond intelligently to a very wide variety of technical issues therefore makes it a perfect candidate to support a world in the midst of change and whose constraints are increasing drastically from year to year. Biomimicry's innovative potential supports the development of Bioxegy For 5 years, our company has been growing and developing. Indeed, from year to year our total revenue doubles while our confidence is affirmed with large industrial groups from around twenty sectors, implementing to date nearly 80 ambitious R&D projects. Our success is due to the development of unique expertise and methodologies in Europe as well as our motivation , thoroughness and the diverse profiles on our team which has increased tenfold since its beginnings.

Biomorphism: the revolution of design Biomorphism, one of the many sub-methods of biomimicry, consists of drawing inspiration from the shapes of nature, for its aesthetic aspect but also for its performance. Since the first use of the terms “biomorphic” or “biomorphe” by Alfred CORT HADDON, in his work Evolution in Art published in 1895, biomorphism has been found in various works. The latter has an artistic but also technical character. Biomorphism meets technological performance objectives, particularly in the fields of mobility and construction! Players in the transport and real estate fields face issues related to reducing the consumption of energy and limited resources. In aeronautics or automotive (to name just these two sectors), aerodynamic losses lead to excess fuel consumption which involves pollution and additional costs. Minimising these losses is therefore a crucial issue for these two industrial categories. In the construction industry, raw material costs and the impact on the environment are major issues for tomorrow's buildings. Succeeding in developing premises, offices and homes with resistant, lightweight and thermally efficient structures (among other things) are challenges of the highest order. However, traditional methods of reflection to optimise current solutions encounter their limits. The majority of shapes are currently generated from an anthropo-thought solution, dependent on manufacturing methods and performance parameters. What if in reality we had to push the changes further to see the beneficial effects appear? In terms of resources and time, it is not possible to test all possible combinations. How then can we know if a drastic change will be better? A specialist in the field, Bioxegy explains to you through a few examples why and how biomimicry is a source of solutions and new approaches for thinking about the biomorphism of the future. Natural forms emerged as a result of 3.8 billion years of evolution and natural selection. The interest of biomorphism is to be able to offer new designs that are very different from the usual ones. Industrial design methods, based on anthropomorphism, have favoured the emergence of simple and regular shapes: paving stone, square cube, rectangle, round, sphere, etc. By reproducing the shapes and trends found in nature, biomorphism makes it possible to make drastic changes towards more organic shapes: comb, grooves, scales, hexagonal tiling... In life, these shapes appeared as the result of 3.8 billion years of evolution and natural selection. Biomorphism can be a source of incremental or disruptive innovations. Using this approach, new shapes and geometries can be designed to result in innovative and improved designs. In nature, the design of each living being are compromises in order to optimise all parameters: maximising performance by minimising trade-offs. For example, the shape of birds' wings allows them to glide with minimal effort and minimal mass. The shape of fish scales reduces friction with the water while protecting them. Thanks to the shape of its beak and skull, the kingfisher penetrates the water without splashing or making waves, which allows it to catch its prey without blurring its vision. And there are a plethora of other examples of biomorphism designed from the two million species known to date (2022)! By using these forms, it is therefore possible to develop high-performance systems. What is the role of Bioxegy in the field of biomorphism? A specialist in biomimicry, Bioxegy will use a biomorphic approach as a response to some of the many industrial and complex problems. Through a few examples, biomorphism will perhaps convince you that it is a method of reflection that can lead to concrete results. Passive thermoregulation of the cactus Biological inspiration: Torch cactuses live in hot, arid deserts. They must therefore regulate their surface temperature to limit water loss. A particularity of these cactuses is the presence of outgrowing awns. This shape creates a temperature difference between the inside and outside of their sides. This not only creates shading but also causes convective flows of cooling air. Biomorphic technical system: The Votu Brazil hotel decided to implement boards on all building facades, thus reducing exposure to the sun's rays. This biomorphism, which imitates the ribs of the torch cactus, limits direct exposure by 75% on average and generates external air currents. The surface temperature of the protected windows is reduced by 6°C in summer. Box fish: an inspiration for some vehicles Biological inspiration: Box fish are astonishing animals, their cubic (or cobblestone) shape contrasts with the usual rather elongated shapes of fish and clashes with our conventional conceptions of hydrodynamics. However, the boxfish moves with agility in the aquatic environment, it is even capable of maneuvering in all directions. Biomorphic technical system: These shapes intrigued the engineers at Mercedes-Benz, who focused on the development of a concept of a car imitating the shape of box fish. The results are surprising: in addition to reducing friction, the volume available inside the passenger compartment and trunk is maximised. Vehicles such as cars, trucks or buses are subject to a high drag force due to their large frontal area, which leads to high fuel consumption and significant costs. Air has difficulty flowing in this area. A car fairing is inspired by the shape of the boxfish to guide airflow. The coefficient of friction is reduced by more than two (from 0.56 to 0.24) compared to a conventional vehicle. Biomorphism therefore reduces the effort to move forward, reduces the influence of side winds and pressure fluctuations on the sides due to the separation of the air flow around the fairing. Fuel consumption is therefore reduced and driving is more pleasant. Rethinking wind turbines: biomorphism is used to change the way they operate and produce energy Biological inspiration: Kelp, also called bladderwrack, is a kind of algae that floats and undulates in a column thanks to the presence of small balls filled with air. This allows it to remain on the surface to carry out photosynthesis and protect itself from drought by remaining in the currents. The kelp also secretes a mucus which limits its evapotranspiration and it is one of the longest, flexible and mechanically resistant species of kelp. Biomorphic technical system: Conventional tidal turbines look like wind turbines but underwater, they are driven by sea currents. Only the rotating movement of the blades disturbs these currents as well as the local fauna and flora. Scientists were therefore interested in a paradigm shift, another way of producing electricity by capturing the energy of currents or waves. After a snake tidal turbine and another with a membrane inspired by eels, they designed a tidal turbine inspired by the kelp. Developped in Australia by BioPower Systems teams, it is attached to the ground in medium depth areas (between 30 and 50m) near the coast and can be directly connected to the network. It follows the movement and direction of the waves by pivoting on its base for greater energy production and less resistance. In addition, its biomimetic design makes it safe for local wildlife. This device is easily detachable to be able to carry out maintenance on land without moving the entire structure. 25m high, one unit would produce up to 1MW, like a small wind turbine. Likewise, our wind turbines can be redesigned thanks to biomorphism. Biomimicry & aerodynamics: A commonplace The challenge is the same in many industries, particularly in aeronautics or in the automotive industries: the future of these sectors depend largely on their ability to reduce the environmental impact of their technologies, particularly in regard to CO2 emissions. An essential lever: improving aerodynamic finesse. Aerostructures, bodywork, airfoils, propellers and blades: biomimicry is an ideal tool of technological design to review or improve industrial methods and approaches concerning aerodynamics . Many species of birds, insects or even aquatic animals have amazing movement abilities. They are juggling effort, speed and endurance. Biomimicry, which is not new to the field, seeks to understand how these forms and coatings present in nature can enlighten the adoption of new design approaches for industrial structures and components. The goal: reduce drag, improve aerodynamic finesse, reduce turbulence vortex, stabilize movement, reduce friction,... The aeronautics industry is one of the most advanced in terms of bio-inspiration: winglets inspired by large raptors (-4% consumption), aerodynamic varnishes inspired by the skin of sharks (-2% consumption). The use cases are already numerous. There are still many opportunities to explore. Here is a particularly striking example. The humpback whale is a cetacean of impressive size: 13 to 15 meters long and nearly 40 tons. Despite this, it is a particularly agile marine animal , capable of hunting herring or salmon: it is capable of sharp turns to trap or chase its prey. This size vs. agility duality surprises marine biologists. They discover that part of the mystery lies in the humpback whale's anatomical features . Indeed, it owes its agility to the tubercles present on the leading edges of its fins. A peculiarity that defies common sense : how can such a deformed and non-smooth surface be so hydro- and aerodynamic? Since then, the aerodynamic effects of these protuberances have been widely studied: Tubercles reduce drag by almost 8%. They also accompany the flow of air so as to delay the stall and to increase its angle by almost 40%! Other advantages, although not demonstrated to date, have been mentionned: reduction of noise pollution and increase in lift. Diagrams produced by the Bioxegy team, as part of an infrastructure project carried out with one of our partners. The tubercles of the fins, placed upstream of the phalanges on the leading edge, allow, among other things, to stabilise and group together the disturbing vortices. ©Bioxegy | Right diagram partly based on figures from: True & William, the whalebone whales of the western North Atlantic, 1904 This discovery has since led to many bio-inspired technologies: The ZIPP company, expert manufacturer of bicycle wheels, opted for a design that reproduces the protrusions of the fin to improve the aerodynamics and stability of the whole structure: a patented technology that has significantly reduced the drag experienced by the wheel. In Canada, one of the experts who highlighted the aerodynamic phenomena created by tubercles launched the company WhalePower. It has designed a bio-inspired wind turbine blade that uses the principle of protrusion on the leading edge to improve the performance of the airfoil. Result: the wind turbine thus equipped has a 20% higher yield and is activated by weaker wind forces.
